If you want to understand the relationship between the history of Spain, and its culture, customs and politics today, this course is ideal for you.

We aim to achieve a broad understanding of the history of Spain and Latin America, by studying the most important events in their history, as well as the relationship between these events and the culture and daily life of these countries.

The content of the Spanish and Latin American history and art course is not fixed: if a specific historic period, artist or artistic movement interests you more, let us know, and we will attempt to adapt the course to include more of what you want to study. Or, if you wish, you can study a little of everything, in order to gain a general understanding of the formative events of Spain and Latin America.

More details on the Spanish and Latin American history and art course

Spain

With regards to Spain, we focus on the influence that Roman, Jewish and Arabic civilizations have had on the Peninsula (the Arabic influence is of particular interest here in Granada, where you will see its traces throughout the city, especially in the Albayzin, home to Escuela Delengua), as well as the unification of Spain during the reign of the Catholic Kings (another historical event which has a lot to do with the city of Granada), and Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America.

Latin America

The countries of Latin America have a long and interesting history. From the Incas of the Andes and the Aztecs of Mexico, to their discovery by Christopher Columbus and colonialism, and the revolutions and volatile political situation of the 20th Century; Latin America has changed greatly over the centuries.

Art

As we travel through the history of Spain and Latin America, we also look at the artwork of each period. You will study the relationship between art, and the culture, society and historical events that were happening. We will focus on the masters of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as Velásquez; and then on the artists of the 19th and 20th centuries: the Impressionists, Picasso, Dali and Surrealism, etc. Through our discussions, you will improve your vocabulary and capacity for conversation in Spanish, as well as learning to analyse paintings, and finding out about their social and cultural settings.

Visits

Visits will play an important part in the Spanish and Latin American history and art course. Granada is a city in which you can see the history and traces of the many cultures that have co-existed here for centuries everywhere you look. We have the Alhambra, where art and history are mixed in a spectacular monument; the Cathedral and the Royal Chapel with the tombs of the Catholic Kings and its primitive flamenco art; churches and the central library of the University of Granada, one of the most prestigious universities in Spain. On top of this there are also tens of museums of every type, which will help you with your studies of the history and art of Spain and Latin America.
