Description
Discover the history and art of Spain and Latin America while improving your Spanish. Our Spanish History and Art Course explores the historical events, cultures and artistic movements that have shaped the Spanish-speaking world.
The course is ideal if you want to understand Spain beyond the classroom and discover how its history has influenced its culture, traditions and society. In addition, studying history and art in Granada gives you the opportunity to see many of these influences around you.
What will you study?
The course provides a broad introduction to the history of Spain and Latin America. At the same time, you will explore important works of art and their connection with the society and historical events of each period.
The history of Spain
We explore some of the most important periods and events in Spanish history. You will learn about the influence of Roman, Jewish and Arab cultures on the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the unification of Spain under the Catholic Monarchs and the beginning of Spain’s relationship with the Americas.
Granada is particularly interesting in this context. The city preserves many traces of its Islamic and Christian past, from the Alhambra and the Albayzín to the Cathedral and Royal Chapel.
History of Latin America
We also look at the history of Latin America, from the great pre-Columbian civilisations to the arrival of the Europeans and the colonial period.
You will explore important topics such as the Aztec and Inca civilisations, independence movements and the political and social changes that shaped Latin America during the 20th century.
Art and culture
Art is an important part of the course. As we move through different historical periods, you will discover how art reflects the culture, society and events of its time.
For example, the course can include Spanish masters such as Velázquez, as well as artistic movements and figures from the 19th and 20th centuries, including Impressionism, Picasso, Dalí and Surrealism.
You will also discuss works of art in Spanish. Therefore, the course helps you develop your vocabulary and conversation skills while learning how to analyse paintings and understand their historical and cultural context.
History and art beyond the classroom
Visits are an important part of the course because Granada itself is a living history lesson. You can discover the city’s different cultural influences while putting what you learn in class into context.
Depending on the programme, visits can include:
- The Albayzín and its historic streets
- Granada Cathedral and the Royal Chapel
- Churches and historic buildings
- Museums and art collections
As a result, you can connect your lessons with the places, buildings and works of art you see throughout the city.
A flexible Spanish history and art course
The content of the course can be adapted to your interests. If you are particularly interested in a specific historical period, artist or artistic movement, we can focus more on that topic.
Alternatively, you can explore a wide range of subjects to gain a general understanding of the history and art of Spain and Latin America.
